abstract Process for the production of sponge iron in a direct reduction process in which carbon dioxide is separated from the process exhaust gas of a furnace (5) designed for direct reduction of iron ore and mixed with water in an electrolysis stage (1), which is carried out as co-electrolysis (14) or as a combination of water electrolysis ( 11) and reverse water gas shift stage (12) is formed and fed with carbon monoxide and hydrogen formed in the electrolysis stage (1) into the furnace (5) for direct reduction and the process gas for reducing iron oxide from the furnace (5) supplied iron ore and used for carburizing the sponge iron.
