titleOfInvention Bearing arrangement with a pollution sensor
abstract The present invention relates to an assembly (100) having a bearing, a lubricant, and an impurity sensor (150, 250) for detecting an impurity level in the grease lubricant. The impurity sensor includes an electromagnetic wave generator for generating an EM signal having a frequency higher than 1.0 GHz and an EM detection element disposed in contact with the lubricant. The EM detection element receives the generated signal and transmits an output signal whose signal properties respond to a real part ε 'and an imaginary part ε' 'of a complex relative permittivity of the lubricant. The output signal is received by an EM measuring device which measures a first parameter and a second parameter of the output signal, each representative of the real part and the imaginary part of the complex relative permittivity of the lubricant. In accordance with the invention, the EM measuring device is configured to determine a degree of water contamination in the lubricant based on the measured first parameter alone, and to determine a metal particle contamination level in the grease based on both the measured first and second parameters.
