abstract | The invention relates to a method for determining a total hardness of a water sample by means of an automatic analyzer, comprising: Preparing a reaction mixture, wherein preparing the reaction mixture comprises at least adding to the water sample a predetermined amount of a complex compound having the total hardness affecting ingredients of the water sample forming indicator reagent and adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture to a predetermined measurement range of the total hardness; - After the preparation of the reaction mixture irradiation of measuring radiation of a predetermined first wavelength range in the reaction mixture and receiving the measuring radiation after passing through the reaction mixture by means of a radiation receiver which outputs a dependent of an intensity of the received measurement radiation receiver signal; and Receiving and processing the receiver signal by means of control electronics, wherein the processing of the receiver signal comprises determining a measured value of the total hardness of the water sample according to an algorithm adapted to the predetermined measuring range of the total hardness from the receiver signal of the radiation receiver. |
