abstract Methods and systems for capturing particulate matter through a particulate matter (PM) sensor located upstream or downstream of a diesel particulate filter in an exhaust system are provided. The PM sensor may include first and second conductive arrays each having a three-dimensional shape. The first matrix acts as a positive electrode and the second acts as a negative electrode. Each matrix defines extensions and / or passages that interpenetrate each other and / or run adjacent to each other to form a plurality of soot capture gaps. A first of the plurality of carbon capture gaps is aligned orthogonal to a second of the plurality of carbon capture gaps.
