abstract A process for the preparation of a biomimetic cartilage matrix with zonal structuring, comprising the steps of: a) providing at least one substrate and at least three components with artificially introduced crosslinkable groups, said components at least one group A cross-linkable collagen derivative, at least one crosslinkable glycosaminoglycan derivative from the group B and at least one of the components selected from groups A and B is present in at least two species with different degrees of modification, b) applying a first composition comprising at least one species from groups A and B to the at least one substrate, followed by a Crosslinking of the applied composition, then c) application of at least one further composition comprising at least one species from groups A and B to the respective previous composition and crosslinking of the one in the process step at least once b) and c) or the compositions applied in method step c), and d) obtaining a biomimetic cartilage matrix with zonal structuring, wherein at least one of the further compositions in step c) is characterized in that, with respect to the respective previous composition, the total polymer content and the Crosslinkability by altering the amount and identity of at least one species selected from Groups A and B are changed in opposite to each other, and wherein the zonal structuring by rectified strength and swellability gradients within the zonal structuring is excellent.
