A system and method for estimating the torque of a disconnect clutch while starting an engine with the engine in vehicles having an engine selectively coupled to the engine and the transmission may be configured to control engine torque based on a clutch torque which is estimated from a difference in a measured powertrain state and a predicted powertrain state using the engine torque as input. The powertrain conditions may include, for example, engine speed, turbine speed, engine speed, and clutch torque. An adaptive gain may be used to null the difference between the measured and estimated clutch torques. |
