titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of 2-methylbutyric acid with a reduced content of 3-methylbutyric acid from the secondary streams obtained in the preparation of pentanoic acids
abstract A process for the separation of 2-methylbutyric acid with a reduced content of 3-methylbutyric acid from the secondary streams obtained in the preparation of pentanoic acids, obtained by a) reacting a mixture containing linear butenes in the presence of transition metal compounds of Group VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and elevated pressure to give a pentanal mixture; b) separating the mixture obtained according to step a) into a stream enriched with 2-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanal and into an n-pentanal-enriched stream; characterized in that one c) the stream enriched according to step b) with 2-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanal continuously reacted in a flow tube with formaldehyde; d) treating the reaction product obtained after step c) with an oxidizing agent; and e) from the reaction product obtained according to step d) 2-methylbutyric acid with a residual content of 3-methylbutyric acid of less than 0.2 wt .-%, based on the organic fraction, removed by distillation.
