abstract A method of establishing a casting or molding process to produce a casting or molding to receive a punch rivet (10) thereby to form a joint for attaching the casting or molding to a workpiece, the casting or molding formed in an upper and lower mold forming a lower mold (66, 68) formed with opposite surfaces and arranged inside a mold, wherein the upper of the two opposite surfaces is a flat surface (74) and at the lower of the opposite surfaces, a bead (70) is provided and wherein a gap (G) is formed between the upper surface (74) and an upper surface of the bead (70); the method comprising: a circular insert (150) of a ductile metal having a thickness of at most 3% smaller than the gap (G) and a plurality of apertures (152) in the periphery is pressed to form a pressed insert having a domed cap (150 and an angled collar (154) including the apertures (152), the collar (154) dimensioned to closely fit the bead (70); the pressed insert (150) is positioned at a solidus temperature in the mold cavity on the bead (70), the pressed insert (150) being elastically deformed due to its thickness and curvature upon closure of the molds (66, 68) to compensate for tolerances and thereby both a contact the insert (150) with the surface (74) of the upper mold (66) as well as a complete closing of the molds (66, 68) is made possible; and the mold cavity is filled with a flowable cast alloy or a moldable polymeric material at a temperature lower than the solidus temperature of the insert (150), wherein the flowable cast alloy or moldable polymer material penetrates into the apertures (152) to form the insert (150). to attach to the casting or molding; and the casting alloy or moldable polymer material is cooled to about room temperature.
