abstract | The present invention relates to a process for the regeneration of an adsorbent loaded with sulfur or a sulfur-containing compound as an adsorbate, the process comprising the steps of providing the loaded adsorbent, contacting the loaded adsorbent with one or more sulfur or sulfide-oxidizing microorganisms, wherein said microorganism or said microorganisms are in pure culture or in mixed culture, and activation of said microorganism or said microorganisms whereby the contaminated adsorbate is regenerated by said microorganism by oxidation. Preferably, the adsorbent is a nonpolar adsorbent such as activated carbon and the microorganisms are sulfur oxidizing or sulfide oxidizing microorganisms, preferably microorganisms of the genera Acidithiobacillus, Thiobacillus, Beggiatoa, Thiomargarita, Chlorobium, Chromatium, Thiotrix, Bacillus, Lysinibacilla, or Thiovulum, or combinations thereof. |
