titleOfInvention Sacrificial anode coatings for magnesium alloys
abstract It describes elemental magnesium coatings and methods of applying them to surfaces of magnesium based alloy articles of manufacture. Such coatings can be chosen to be anodic to magnesium, and thus, when applied to magnesium articles, can act as sacrificial anodes and provide corrosion protection to the articles. The utility of such coatings can be increased by adding a barrier layer overlying the sacrificial metal layer, such as a passive magnesium-containing alloy, a conversion layer, anodic oxide layer, or lacquer. Methods are described for depositing sacrificial metal layers on a magnesium based alloy article that includes physical vapor deposition on the article, electrodeposition onto the article, and immersion of the article in a molten alloy.
