titleOfInvention | Electrolytic capacitor containing a liquid electrolyte |
abstract | An electrolytic capacitor is provided which includes an anodically oxidized porous anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte containing an alkali metal salt and an ion-conducting polymer. The alkali metal salt forms a complex with the ion-conducting polymer and thereby improves its ionic conductivity, especially at higher temperatures. The electrolyte also contains an organic solvent which reduces the viscosity of the electrolyte and helps to lower the potential barrier to metal ion transport within the electrolyte, thus improving conductivity. By selectively controlling the relative amount of each of these components, the inventors have found that a highly ion-conducting electrolyte, also in the form of a viscous liquid, can be formed. The liquid nature of the electrolyte enables it to more easily enter the pores of the anode via capillary forces and to improve its specific capacity. Furthermore, while it is a liquid, the likelihood of leakage is reduced due to its viscous nature. |
