abstract There is provided an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine having a filter disposed in an exhaust passage to capture particulate matter (PM) contained in exhaust gas. The control system calculates the amount of particulates accumulated in the filter in a differential pressure-based calculation process and begins to regenerate the filter when the calculated particulate amount exceeds a threshold. The control system determines a burned amount indicative parameter indicative of the amount of particulates burned by a reaction with NOx or NO 2 in the exhaust gas, and determines that the accuracy of the differential pressure based calculation method has deteriorated when the burned amount indicative Parameter exceeds a given threshold.
