abstract The invention relates to a device (4) for detecting insulation faults (11) of a cable as a test body (10), wherein the cable comprises a stranded conductor (2) as a core and a sheath (3) made of an insulating material, characterized by at least following device parts : - A gas container (5) with valve (7) containing an inert test gas (6); - A line (8), wherein a line connection (9) connects the gas container (5) with one end of the test body (10), wherein after opening of the valve (7) a gas flow along the stranded conductor (2) within the insulating sheath (3 ) is produced; - A detector (12) which is along the test body (10) movable back and forth, thereby detects contactless under escaping the test gas (6) insulation error (11) of the sheath (3); - And a measuring station (13) which communicates with the detector (12) and thereby evaluates the measured data. Furthermore, a method for detecting insulation faults is presented.
