abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of dieno-estrone from estrone methyl ether, comprising the steps of reacting estrone methyl ether in an alcohol in the presence of an acid with a trialkoxymethane to give 3-methoxy-17, 17-dialkoxy-estra-1,3,5-triene, Partial reduction of the reaction product by reaction with alkali metal in liquid ammonia to give 3-methoxy-17,17-dialkoxy-estra-2,5 (10) -diene, reaction of the weak acid reaction product to give 3-methoxy-estra-2,5 (10 ) -dien-17-one, reaction of the reaction product with cyanomethyl-lithium to give 3-methoxy-17α-cyanomethyl-17β-hydroxy-estra-2,5 (10) -diene, followed by reacting the reaction product with weak acid to give 17α-cyanomethyl -17β-hydroxy-estra-5 (10) -ene-3-one and reaction with pyridinium-bromine complex in pyridine to give dienogest.
