abstract The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for the decomposition of nitrous oxide. The apparatus comprises a gas inlet 1 for supplying a nitrous-containing gas, a first heat exchange means 3 for exchanging heat between an exhaust gas and the nitrous-containing gas, a heating device 4 for temporarily heating the nitrous-containing gas, a fixed bed reactor 5 in which a catalyst is accommodated to decompose the nitrous oxide in the nitrous oxide gas, a gas outlet through which the exhaust gas leaving the fixed bed reactor can be removed via the heat exchanger means 3. According to the invention, the catalyst for the decomposition of nitrous oxide at temperatures below 800 ° C, particularly preferably below 450 ° C, more preferably below 400 ° C, is suitable. The fixed bed reactor 5 is designed for operation in an adiabatic state.
