abstract Method of tanning animal skins, comprising the steps of: - staining and pimpling of the animal skin in aqueous solution, Reducing the liquid content of the animal skin by at least 5%, Providing a tanning solution having a tannin content at least equal to the amount of tanning agent capable of absorbing the animal skin to be treated and at most in an excess of 20%, Replacing the at least part of the quantity of liquid withdrawn from the animal skin in the preceding step by the tanning solution provided such that the liquor ratio has a value of less than 1, and Treating the animal skin containing the tanning solution with compressed gas in a pressure vessel for a period of at least 15 minutes.
