abstract The invention relates to a device for compressing or relaxing a gaseous working fluid by means of a hydraulic fluid, comprising a first adiabatic cylinder (8, 108) and a second adiabatic cylinder (7, 107) connected to the first cylinder (8, 108) via a device is hydraulically connected to the supply (11) or discharge (111) of energy, wherein (a) in a first state, the gaseous working fluid is in the first adiabatic cylinder (8, 108) and the hydraulic fluid is in the second adiabatic cylinder (7, 107); (B) in a first step, the hydraulic fluid from the second adiabatic cylinder (7, 107) in the first adiabatic cylinder (8, 108) is guided, wherein the hydraulic fluid passes through the means for supplying (11) or discharge (111) of energy ; (c) in a second state, the gaseous working fluid is in the second adiabatic cylinder (7, 107) and the hydraulic fluid is in the first adiabatic cylinder (8, 108); (D) in a second step, the hydraulic fluid from the first adiabatic cylinder (8, 108) in the second adiabatic cylinder (7, 107) is guided, wherein the hydraulic fluid passes through the means for supplying (11) or discharge (111) of energy ; and (E) the first step (b) upon reaching the second state and then the second step (d) are repeatedly executed upon reaching the first state.
