titleOfInvention | Use of biological photoreceptors as direct light-gated ion channels |
abstract | The invention relates to the use of a biological photoreceptor as a direct light-controlled ion channel for altering the ionic conductivity of a membrane by means of light, in which the photoreceptor comprises an apoprotein and a light-sensitive polyene, wherein the light-sensitive polyene is covalently bound to the apoprotein with which apoprotein interacts and functions as a photosensitive gate in which the apoprotein is an ion channel-forming opsin or a derivative or fragment of ion channel-forming opsin, and which can cause or induce death of a cell by exposure to changes in the ionic conductivity of the membrane. |
