abstract | Process for the preparation of rubbery graft polymers composed of (a 1 ) a particulate emulsion polymer as a grafting base A1, composed of (a 11 ) at least one diene or at least one alkyl acrylate having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical or mixtures of the at least one diene and the at least one alkyl acrylate, as component A11, (a 12 ) optionally at least one polyfunctional, crosslinking monomer, as component A12, and (a 13 ) optionally at least one further copolymerizable monomer, as component A13, wherein the particulate emulsion polymer additionally may have a core composed of at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and optionally further monomers; (a 2 ) of a graft A2 constructed from (a 21 ) at least one vinyl aromatic monomer A21, and / or (a 22 ) at least one polar copolymerizable comonomer selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, esters of (meth) acrylic acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical, maleic anhydride and its imides, (meth) acrylamide and vinylalkyl ethers having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the Alkyl radical, as component A22, characterized in that the particulate emulsion polymer A1 has at least one fraction of agglomerated particles, the fraction of agglomerated particles F having a nonuniformity U F of <0.35 and the difference between the maximum particle size of the fraction of non-agglomerated particles and the minimum particle size of the at least one Fraction of agglomerated particles> 100 nm by (i) polymerizing the monomers A11 and optionally A12 and A13 in aqueous emulsion to give a particulate rubber (substrate rubber), (ii) agglomeration of the particulate rubber present in an emulsion by means of at least one particulate agglomerate AL, wherein the agglomerate AL has a defined nonuniformity U AL ≦ 0.65 and is a particulate copolymer composed of (al 1) one or more hydrophobic monomers (AL1) of the general formula I CH 2 = CHR 1 -C (O) -R 2 wherein R 1 is H or CH 3 , and R 2 is C 1 to C 6 alkyl; and (al 2 ) one or more hydrophilic monomers (AL 2 ) selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, acrylamide, methacrylamide, itaconamide, crotonamide, N-methylolmethacrylamide and N-vinylpyrrolidone; (al3) optionally further monomers (AL3) copolymerizable with (AL1) and (AL2); to an agglomerated particulate emulsion polymer, and below (iii) polymerizing the monomers A21 and A22 of the grafting pad in aqueous emulsion in the presence of the agglomerated particulate emulsion polymer. |
