abstract The invention relates to highly shear-thinning polyvinyl acetals, characterized in that their solution viscosity in 30 wt .-% - solution in methyl ethyl ketone in a shear rate range of 1 to 100 s -1 by at least 30% decreases. Another object of the invention is a process for the preparation of high shear thinning polyvinyl acetal by acetalization of partially saponified or fully saponified vinyl ester polymers with ≧ 50 mol% of vinyl alcohol units with one or more aldehydes, optionally in the form of their hydrates, half or full acetals, characterized characterized in that the aldehyde is completely added within a maximum of 15 minutes.
