The use of novel water-insoluble hydrophilic polymers which are crosslinked, in the form of discrete particles and containing effective heavy metal-binding thiol or thione groups, allows for an advantageous process for the extraction of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The procedure allows (1) the removal of harmful heavy metals from dilute aqueous solutions that are used in harmless quality or released into the environment, (2) the enrichment of valuable heavy metals from dilute aqueous solutions of the salts. |
