abstract An internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders has injectors associated with the cylinders, which meter fuel, wherein an exhaust gas probe is arranged in an exhaust tract and its measurement signal is characteristic of the air / fuel ratio in the respective cylinder. A sampling crankshaft angle (CRK_SAMP) with respect to a reference position of the piston of the respective cylinder is determined for detecting the measurement signal, depending on a variable characterizing the air / fuel ratio in the respective cylinder or an ambient pressure (AMP) or Opening degree (OG_WG) of a bypass valve of a bypass to a turbine, which is arranged in the exhaust tract. At the sampling crankshaft angle (CRK_SAMP), the measurement signal is detected and assigned to the respective cylinder.
