abstract A process for preparing a C 16 -Alkangemisches, which is characterized in that a butene-containing C 4 hydrocarbon stream having less than 5% by mass, based on the sum of all butenes, of isobutene, in the presence of a nickel-containing catalyst is oligomerized, that from the reaction mixture, the C 16 -Olefinfraktion is separated and that this C 16 fraction is hydrogenated. The resulting C 16 alkane-containing mixture has a composition in which the molecules contained contain on average less than 1.0 quaternary C atoms per molecule.
