titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of 2,7-dimethyl-octa-2,4,6-trienial |
abstract | The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of 2,7-dimethyl-octa-2,4,6-trienes of the formula I, by a) double enol ether condensation of a butenedial-bis-acetal of the formula II with an enol ether of the formula III, in the presence of a Lewis acidic catalyst to a condensation product of formula IV, where the radicals R 1 and R 2 of the formula II to IV independently of one another are C 1 -C 6 -alkyl; b) hydrolysis of the acetal groups of IV by addition of an aqueous acid to give the dialdehyde of formula V; c) conversion of V into the dialdehyde I by reaction with an aqueous base and d) crystallization of I from the reaction mixture, wherein the process steps a) to d) are carried out in the presence of an inert, water-immiscible organic solvent. |
