abstract Compounds of the formula I are suitable for the preparation of medicaments for the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases in the course of which an increased activity of matrix metalloproteinases are involved. These include diseases such as degenerative joint disease, such as osteoarthrosis, spondylosis, cartilage loss after joint trauma or prolonged immobilization after meniscal or patella injuries or torn ligaments, or connective tissue disease, such as collagenosis, periodontal disease, wound healing disorders, or a chronic musculo-skeletal disorder such as inflammatory, immunological or metabolic acute or chronic arthritides, arthropathies, myalgias or disorders of bone metabolism or ulceration, atherosclerosis or stenosis. Furthermore, the compounds of the formula I are suitable for the treatment of inflammations, cancers, tumor metastasis, cachexia, anorexia, heart failure and septic shock and for the prophylaxis of myocardial and cerebral infarcts.
