abstract | The use of neutral straight-chain or branched oligosaccharides for the prevention of invasion and infection of mammalian cells by pathogens and for combating diseases caused by such pathogens and food, dietetic and pharmaceutical compositions containing these oligosaccharides are described. These oligosaccharides are composed of a basic unit of the following general formula I: DOLLAR F1 and 0 to 19 further, directly or indirectly linked units of the following general formula II: DOLLAR F2 wherein DOLLAR A Gal is a galactose-monosaccharide unit, DOLLAR A Glc is a glucose Monosaccharide unit, DOLLAR A HexNAc is an N-acetylated galactosamine or glucosamine monosaccharide unit (GalNAc or GlcNAc), DOLLAR A the radicals R are each independently a beta 1-3 or beta 1-6 glycosidic linkage to the HexNAc Monosaccharide unit of the next [Gal-HexNAc] unit of the general formula II and at a terminal [Gal-HexNAc] unit represent a deoxyhexose residue linked to the galactose monosaccharide unit of this terminal [Gal-HexNAc] unit or are absent, and a terminal [Gal-HexNAc] unit in which the radical (s) R is a deoxyhexose radical (s) on the HexNAc monosaccharide unit may have further deoxyhexose residue, composed. |
