titleOfInvention Device and method for processing digital images
abstract The invention relates to a method and a device for the improved representation of small dark structures such as, in particular, cardiac vessels in digital X-ray images. A live image (S) is initially subjected to a multi-scale decomposition, whereby detailed images (D1, D2, D3, D4) of different resolutions are obtained through several applications of low-pass filtering with subsequent resolution reductions (RED) on the one hand and increases in resolution with subsequent low-pass filtering (EXP) on the other. According to a first variant of the method, a mask (M) representing the background of no interest is subtracted from the detail image (D4) of the lowest resolution level. This ensures that the subtraction only captures correspondingly rough structures whose dimensions are larger than the expected image movements. An additional improvement can be achieved by applying a motion estimation (MOT EST) and motion compensation (MOT COMP) to the mask (M) and the detail image (D4) of the lowest resolution level. The detail images (D1-D4) can be multiplied by factors (c¶2¶) before they are reassembled to form the overall image (G). In this case, asymmetrical amplification functions are preferably used, negative contrast values corresponding to small dark structures being amplified and positive contrast values being suppressed.
