The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-alkoxy-1-propanal by reaction of acrolein with saturated alcohols in the presence of bases, selected from alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and amines as a catalyst at a temperature in the range from 0 ° C.-45 ° C.
