abstract A drive system designed for hybrid vehicles uses a first torque path from a coupled motor / generator system and an internal combustion engine through an automatically shifted manual transmission with a second torque path from a secondary torque source to the wheels. The system includes the high efficiency of a manual transmission with the smooth operation of the most advanced automatic transmissions by using a second torque path to maintain torque requested by the driver during gear changes. The system is also able to perform shifts without opening the clutch by using active synchronization of the speed of the drive shaft combined with the power control of the shift actuator. This leads to fast and jerk-free switching operations that take place without unpleasant torque pulsation.
