abstract | Methods are described by means of which an ethyleneimine polymer and an aqueous solution thereof can advantageously be prepared on a technical scale at low cost. The ethyleneimine polymer can be prepared by polymerizing crude ethyleneimine obtained by a simple distillation process from a reaction mixture containing ethyleneimine, prepared by subjecting ethanolamine to an intermolecular dehydration reaction, preferably crude ethyleneimine, with levels of impurities controlled within specific ranges. When the above crude ethyleneimine is polymerized in an aqueous medium, an aqueous solution of the ethyleneimine polymer having a higher molecular weight can be obtained than when it is prepared by non-solvent polymerization. The ethyleneimine polymer can be purified, for example, by adding water to mix and then evaporate and remove the water with heating. The aqueous solution of the ethyleneimine polymer can be purified by heating and condensing. |
