abstract The invention relates to the use of sialyltransferases, in particular the sialyltransferase ST6Ga1NAc-II for the diagnosis and therapy of tumor diseases. The mRNA expression of the enzyme sialyltransferase ST6Ga1NAc-II is increased in cases where lymph node metastases occur. Studies on 40 well documented cases of colorectal cancer show that ST6Ga1NAc-II expression is a prognostic factor in the consideration of such patients. In addition, by blocking the expression of the sialyltransferase ST6Ga1NAc-II, the synthesis of the tumor-associated antigen TF can be blocked, which may improve the prognosis. The invention also relates to inhibiting the expression of the enzyme by pharmaceutical agents.
