abstract The invention relates to an ink ribbon positioning system (40) for a color printer (54) for determining the different positions of the ink ribbon (42; 78; 90; 104). The ribbon contains a plurality of successive color frames (46, 48, 50; 80, 82, 84, 86; 92, 94, 96, 98; 106, 108, 110, 112) for storing different printing inks. The color printer contains a print head (74) and a drive (72) for moving the ink ribbon relative to the print head. The ribbon positioning system contains at least one light source (62, 64; 62, 102; 122, 124) for transmitting different light beams (63, 65) through the ribbon, a photosensor (66) for detecting the light that has passed through the ribbon and a detection device (68 ) in control connection with the light source. If the ink ribbon is moved relative to the printhead, the recognition device controls the light source and identifies the position of each ink frame on the ink ribbon due to the changing output voltage of the photosensor.
