titleOfInvention | Asphalt concrete |
abstract | Asphalt cement modified with SBR and asphalt concrete produced therewith, the SBR being approximately a mixture of (i) a high molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber with a weight average molecular weight of at least about 300,000 and (ii) a low molecular weight styrene butadiene rubber with a weight average molecular weight less than about 280,000, wherein the ratio of high molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber to low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber is in the range of about 80:20 to 25:75 and the bound styrene content of the high molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber is differs from the bound styrene content of the low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber by at least 5 percentage points. The styrene-butadiene rubber composition has a number average molecular weight, as determined by field flow fractionation, in the range from about 50,000 to 150,000 and the styrene-butadiene rubber has a ratio of light scattering to refractive index in the range of 1.8 up to 3.9. By modifying the asphalt cement, the resistance to displacement, grooving and cold cracking of the asphalt concrete produced with it is increased. The emulsion SBR used is practically compatible with all types of asphalt, and modified asphalt putties made with it have high ductility, strength and toughness. |
