abstract |
A system that includes an NO x adsorption catalyst (18) in an exhaust gas flow passage of an internal combustion engine that adsorbs and traps NO x in an oxidizing atmosphere of the exhaust gas during a lean-burn operation and then generates a reducing atmosphere to regenerate the adsorbing catalyst (18). A reduction treatment of NO x is carried out based on an estimated NO x purification rate, the NO x purification rate in an exhaust gas from lean-burn combustion always being kept approximately at a predetermined level, whereby the amount of harmful exhaust gases emitted can be reduced. |
