The invention relates to a spherical catalyst support material which contains alumina hydrate, produced from bauxite, and 1 to 25% by weight (based on the total solids content) of hydrotalcite. According to the invention, a mixture of alumina hydrate, hydrotalcite, water and mineral acid is produced. This mixture is subjected to spray drying and then tempered.
