titleOfInvention Method and device for determining a dynamic range of a digital medical image
abstract A method and an apparatus for adapting a dynamic range of a digital medical image for a medical imaging device are provided. The digital medical image includes a clinical area and a non-clinical area. The method and apparatus identify the non-clinical area of the digital medical image and mask the non-clinical area therein to create a clinical image. The clinical image is then used to calculate a desired dynamic range for the medical imaging device. The dynamic range of the medical imaging device is adapted accordingly. According to a first embodiment, the non-clinical area is identified by dividing the digital medical image into bands of predetermined width, generating profiles for each band and differentiating the profiles to achieve a differentiated profile of each band of a digital medical image. The differentiated profile is then analyzed to identify peaks that exceed predetermined thresholds, the areas of the differentiated profile immediately corresponding to peaks that exceed the threshold non-clinical areas. Once the non-clinical areas are identified, they are masked or removed.
