abstract The invention relates to a position measuring system for determining the relative position of two mutually movable objects with an incremental track assigned to the first object with a periodic line structure, with a scanning unit assigned to the second object for scanning the line structure and for generating a corresponding incremental signal, and with means for generating an absolute position information relating to the position of the objects that are movable relative to one another. According to the invention, the extent (b) of the lines (s) along the direction of extension (E) of the incremental track (1) varies at least over part of the width (l) of the incremental track (1) in such a way that the periodic line structure also has a structure an absolute position information is superimposed.
