titleOfInvention Oxygen sensor for an internal combustion engine
abstract An oxygen sensor is specified with a cylindrical tube made of a ceramic solid electrolyte with the property of oxygen ion conduction, with a reference electrode on the inner surface of the cylindrical tube and with a measuring electrode on the outer surface of the cylindrical tube at a position which is at least opposite the reference electrode. The oxygen sensor is characterized in that on the outer surface of the cylindrical tube there is a ceramic layer which has an opening area for exposing the surface of the measuring electrode and contains a heating element which surrounds the opening area and is embedded. The oxygen sensor as a whole has a cylindrical shape, reduces the concentration of thermal stress, and has excellent thermal shock resistance. With the heating element, which is embedded in the vicinity of the sensor area, the sensor area is heated to a predetermined activation temperature within short periods of time, which means an excellent response of the sensor (FIG. 1a).
