A b-lactam of formula I: wherein R 1 is aryl, substituted aryl, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; R 2 is hydrogen, alkyl, acyl, acetal, ethoxyethyl or another hydroxyl protecting group; and R 3 is aryl, substituted aryl, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; and a process for producing taxol, wherein said b-lactam and an alcohol are contacted in the presence of an activating agent to produce a taxol intermediate and conversion of the intermediate into taxol.
