This flame retardant is a nuclear halogenated, preferably nuclear-brominated α-methylstyrene oligomer with and without end groups, preferably carboxyl groups, having a molecular weight of 1,000-5,000, preferably 1,200-3,000 and a halogen content of preferably 40-70%, and is used in amounts of 1-60 *, preferably 3-50 *, of latex solids are admixed with the known synthetic rubber latices and / or polyacrylate dispersions.
