abstract | Described is a method and pharmaceutical composition for ablating mammalian tumor cells, which method consists of exposing the cells to the light in the presence of a photoactivated tetrapyrrole, the improvement being to treat these cells with a compound which inhibits the enzymatic conversion of protoporphyrinogen to protoporphyrin IX by protoporphyrinogen oxidase in these cells, causing protoporphyrin IX to build up in these cells. There is also described a method for producing protoporphyrin IX which consists of breeding eukaryotic microalgae in the presence of a protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitor.
