abstract The invention relates to pyridinyl quinolone compounds, in particular to new 4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids, their preparation and their use as antibacterial agents. The compounds have the general formula wherein R is hydrogen or a short-chain alkyl radical (hereinafter called lower alkyl radical); R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluorine and SR, wherein R is a phenyl, benzyl or lower alkyl radical; R is selected from a group containing hydrogen, fluorine and SR under the condition that when R is hydrogen, R is also hydrogen and Z is in particular a 3-pyridinyl or 4-pyridinyl radical which is substituted by one to three lower alkyl radicals.
