abstract The invention relates to a process for the hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in the presence of hydrogenation catalysts at elevated pressures and elevated temperatures, optionally in the presence of a solvent. The aim of the invention is to largely suppress the undesirable formation of hydrocarbons and other by-products. This is achieved by operating according to the invention in the presence of small amounts of aqueous alkali metal solutions.
