A liquid-crystalline composition having at least two liquid-crystalline components, characterized in that at least one component is a fluorinated oligophenyl of the formula I in which a is 1 and in which the terminal substituents R 1, R 2 and R 3 are each independently one, optionally with CN or with at least one halogen atom substituted, alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 carbon atoms, wherein one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups of these radicals may also be replaced by O, S, CO, OCO, COO, OCO or CC, one of these radicals R1 and R2 also a group of formula, in one of the following pairs of lateral substituents both fluorine: (A, B), (C, D), (D, E), (C, E), (B, C), (D , J), (D, K), (A, C), (C, J), (C, D), (DE), (D, A), (C, E), (C, A), (D, J), (D, K), (D, J), (B, G), (A, G), and all other lateral substituents are hydrogen or fluorine.
