abstract The invention relates to the recovery of rare earth compounds from washes and aqueous suspensions, which are obtained as waste products in the production and use of red phosphors. According to the invention, the red phosphor particles contained in the wash washes and aqueous suspensions are separated by filtration and, after comminuting the filter devices, are separated from the filter material by washing with water. The contaminated red phosphorus concentrate is digested with nitric acid. Impurities on Fe3 and Al3 are precipitated from the resulting rare earth nitrate solutions by blunting with ammonia until p H. The rare earths are separated from other impurities by precipitation as hydroxides of alkaline earths and by transformation as oxalates. The resulting pure rare earth oxalates can be used directly or after conversion to oxides for the preparation of new red phosphors.
