abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel substituted isoxazole derivatives of the general formula I in which R 1 is C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, R 2 is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, R 3 and R 4 independently of one another are hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, but not both are hydrogen and n is an integer 6, or 7 or 8, by cyclization of a compound of general formula II, in which R1, R2, R3, R4 and n are as defined above, by treatment with a dehydrating agent. The new compounds have antiviral activity and can be used as drugs for the treatment and prophylaxis of viral diseases. Formulas I and II
