abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 11b, 15b-dihydroxy- (20S) -20-hydroxymethyl-1,4-pregnadien-3-one by enzymatic conversion of (20S) -20-hydroxymethyl-1,4-pregnadiene with feed of sterile air. The microorganisms used are preferably those of the genus Curvularia, Cochliobulus, Cunninghamella or Bacillus megatherium. The substrate is added in aqueous solution or dissolved in an organic solvent. When using an aqueous suspension, the substance is added in micronized form and in the presence of nonionic emulsifiers. If the substrate is added dissolved in an organic solvent, the substance is dissolved in a lower alcohol ketone, glycol monoether, dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide.
