abstract The invention relates to a method for producing heteronuclear clusters of defined chemical composition by laser evaporation and ionization of a suitable target and extraction of the forming clusters from the laser plasma. The clusters can be used to obtain fine powders or single or multiple layers on solid surfaces (protective layers or optical coating layers). The invention is intended to increase the formation rate of the clusters. This is achieved by using a target that contains the elements represented in the clusters in the form of a mixture of the elements or the corresponding compounds of these elements.
