The invention relates to weed killing agents. According to the invention, di- and tripeptides with N-terminal phosphinothricin of the formula (I) in which phosphinothricin is linked with 1 or 2 molecules of preferably natural amino acids are used as the active ingredient in the novel herbicidal compositions. In formula I, R 1 is hydrogen or (C 1 -C 12) -alkyl, R 2 and R 4 independently of one another are hydrogen, (C 1 -C 12) -alkyl, (C 3 -C 8) -cycloalkyl, phenyl or phenyl (C 1 -C 2) -alkyl, wherein said groups in turn may be substituted by halogen, NH 2, OH, SH, NO 2, CF 3, (C 1 -C 4) alkoxy, (C 1 -C 4) alkylthio, (C 1 -C 4) alkoxycarbonyl, COOH or CONH 2, R 3 and R 3 R5 is hydrogen or methyl, n0 or 1, ando and p independently of one another 0, 1, 2 or 3.
