titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF POLYVINYLBUTYRAL
abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyvinyl butyrals having a high degree of acetalization, which are obtained by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with butyraldehyde in the aqueous phase. The object of the invention is to produce polyvinyl butyrals having a high and uniform degree of acetalization, which are characterized by a good solubility in alkanols at room temperatures, do not form gel particles in the solution and contain no insoluble constituents as a sediment. The object is achieved in that the acetalization of the aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution in the presence of an organic solvent mixture consisting of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid ester in the ratio of alkanol to carboxylic acid ester of 1: 2 to 1:10 with a total content of 0.1 to 8, 0 volume percent, based on the aqueous solution, takes place, wherein the boiling point of the solvent mixture is below the glass transition point of the polyvinyl alcohol used.
